Searching For The Shipleys Of Maryland-
Martha Carroll Gertrude Shipley
According to most of my research, my Shipley family can be traced back to Adam Shipley, who was born about 1650 in Yorkshire, England. He arrived in America in February 1668, along with nine other young men, transported by John Pawson, a merchant from Yorke, England. Adam performed his time of service, and by 1675 had received the fifty acres of land due to him under the incentive plan.
Many people claim his father was Hugh Shipley "a Gentleman grantee of the 2nd charter of The Virginia Company, 1609." I question this statement. Why would Adam need to indenture himself to John Pawson when his father was "a Gentleman grantee?"
My Great-Great Uncle Ulysses Shipley was one of the founders of The Shipleys of Maryland. He was quoted in a newspaper article (Frederick Post, Frederick, Maryland) dated September 15, 1926 as saying the family was descended from two brothers from Cardiff, Wales, who settled in Elkridge Landing, Maryland, in 1734. This obviously doesn't match the Adam Shipley story which is commonly held.
Searching the "Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, 1500's - 1900's" found online at Ancestry.com, I found several early Shipley immigrations:
Adam 1668 to America
Richard 1661 to Virginia
Robert 1667 to Port Uncertain
Robert 1670 to Barbados
Robert 1671 to Barbados
On yet another site I found a Joseph Shipley from London who sailed "Xpmas" 1635, at the age of 21.
Perhaps we'll never know the true story of the Shipleys, but in the meantime I will be keeping an open mind on the subject.

I am indeed a "shipley of maryland", sort of. My grandmother, Frances Green Shipley married Benjamin Franklin Shipley the 3rd and she had all of the Shipley of Maryland Books, Family Crests, and other memorabilia.

OMG, Nikki and Pauline, I totally missed your comments!
I'm so sorry!!!
I have absolutely no idea how long your comments have sat here.
This is indeed a taxing ordeal, but so wonderful at the same time.
Pauline, we must be related then. I'm descended from both Robert Shipley and his brother Peter, sons of Adam. I have the Shipley's 2002 edition, so if you need a lookup, just holler.
I'm wondering if the fact I haven't posted in aeons keeps me from seeing I have comments on this blog.
I am Harry August Shipley, now living in Frederick, Md. My folks are part of the Shipleys of Maryland.
My Pop has been working the family tree for yrs now.

I am doing genealogical research for probate of the will of Albert Fuller, son of Edith Eyster Whitehurst. Edith was born March 10,1887 and was a sister of Goldie Whitehurst, born 6 Dec. 1893, who appears in the Shipley 2002 edition. I don't have the book itself and I need any information on Edith's brothers and sisters and their issue which appears in the book. Would you be able to locate the relevant pages and send them to me? wsimon@mcgarrysimon.com
Hi William A. Simon.
I didn't receive this message until today (since I rarely look at my old postings.)
I did email you the information you requested (from the Shipley books.)
I hope the email address is still current!
Linda
Hap,
Sorry I didn't comment back. I did email you months ago, but never heard a word.
Many of my Shipleys, Murrays and the like were from Frederick County, and later Carroll County. Spent many weeks during the summer in Westminster, visiting relatives.
Hi, I'm Bob King from Arizona.
My maternal grandmother and my paternal great grandmother were both Shipley's.
I believe that I descend from Adam Shipley but I need more facts to prove it.
My last proven ancestor is William Shipley (b. 1780 to 1795 in Pa. or Md.) who married Mary Floyd (b:1797 in London Town, Chester Co., Pa.).
Would you please be so kind as to check The Shipley's of Maryland for them.
You can contact me at:

You have offered to do a look up for another person, I hope you will do me this favor, since you have this book.
I am researching a Lucy Shipley, who married a James Hanks. She would have been born in about 1767in Virginia. She is possibly related to Richard Berry, Sr. and Abraham Lincoln, Sr., who settled in Jefferson County, Kentucky in 1781-82.

Your Lucy Shipley's grandfather Robert was a brother to my ancestor Charles Shipley.
I have information I'm willing to share.
Hi SierraBella, thank you for your research, interesting. I too am a descendant of Charles. I just recently ordered the 1968 edition only to find out there was a 2002. I did request to join the Shipleys of Maryland org though.
I believe I have it right when I say I am Brian, son of William, son of Wilfred, son of Albert, son of Lewis (born Louis), son of Jackson, son of James, son of Charles Jr, son of Charles Sr, son of Robert, son of Adam Shipley
Thanks for the photos.

Well hello Brian!
We're 7th cousins!!!
I have the Shipley's 2002 volumes (there are three.) They've been valuable in my search, but pretty pricey.
You're welcome about the pictures. They don't do much good hiding in a box, so I thought it would be nice to share.
I am trying to connect the dots still. Could you please let me know if the 2004 edition states if Jackson Shipley is a son of James Shipley who is the son of Charles Shipley Jr?

Hi again Brian,
I sent you a message via e-mail.
I apologize. Could you please hit the resend on it. I believe it went to the junk folder, I will comb look for it this time around.
Okay Brian, done.
Most of my research shows Hugh Gentleman Shipley born abt 1624. The 2nd Virginia Charter, which has a Hugh Shipley, was in 1609. Anyone have an explanation for the date mismatch?
Richard Shipley
My Grandparents (now deceased)are from Sykesville Maryland, they had the 1968 book, but I haven't found it. Can you verify that we are from Adam Shipley lineage? Their names are Gilbert Theodore and Harriett Beecher Simpson shipley. I want to buy the 2002 edition for my kids, but want to make sure it is the correct book.
Thanks for any help

Hi, Just wanted to let you know there will be a dedication of the "Shipleys of Maryland Room" on June 23 ,2012 in the Cockeys' building of the Historical Society of Carroll County in Westminster Maryland. The room set up by The Shipleys of Maryland will house the family records that were donated by the late Dorthy Shipley Granger to the HSCC.
Thank You,
Michael M. Shipley
Wow This is amazing. I just found this site.
My ancestor is Charles Shipley Jr. I grew up in Fayette County Pa. Just a hop skip and a jump from Maryland.Great rading all the blogs
Thanks
I too, am a Shipley of Maryland, 6th of 9 children, 2nd of 4 sons born to Walter Shipley. Walter was Walter Jr, passing in June, 2007. His mother was German, by the name of Elizabeth Dennstedt. My maternal grandmothers maiden name was Moylan, while my mothers maiden name is Norris. Little is known of my maternal grandfather, as he passed young and my mom does not remember.
We have a copy of the Shipleys of Maryland, a bit battered, which was given us by my aunt Dorothy, who was involved in family history. I was under the impression she was the author. I was looking for copies for myself, and none show her as author.
The Shipleys are a long lived bunch. Walter lived to 91, his mother to 97, his father to 85. His oldest son, Stephen, passed away in Oct 2008, from ccomplications of kidney disease.
I never knew there was so much info available, and a society.
FYI, Mary Shipley, one of Walters 5 daughters, married a Scotsman named Wallace, yes, that Wallace, a descendant of Braveheart.

SierraBella, Don't know if you are still monitoring this site, but if you are; Hi Cuz! lol If the Charles you speak of was born March 17, 1711 in Maryland, he was my 1st cousin seven times removed. I am descended from Richard Shipley, son of Adam. My maiden name is Shipley, and I also had a Great Grand Uncle named Ulyses Grant Shipey. He was born in 1867. He was my Grandfather William Jesse Emerson Shipley's uncle. Give me a shout if you see/get this comment. June Shipley

Thanks!

Hey folks, I have not been on here in YEARS, but just chose to have all new comments e-mailed to me so that I do not miss anything new.
If you commented previously, feel free to comment again so that I see it. I did e-mail several of you who had left addresses, but a lot of time has passed...
Jeaninne, Yes I have had my DNA done (by 23andMe.) I thought I would have some Jewish DNA, but found I had none!
I am descended from Peter of Adam, Robert of Adam, Keturah of Adam and it's now likely Richard of Adam too!
Hi. .. my name is Julie, maiden name Gipson. My second great gma was Fannie Shipley married to William H Gipson. I've been able to trace back to Adam 1 b. 1650, thru his son Richard. I am stuck at his wife Lois. Does anyone have info on her? I keep reading that she most likely was not a Howard. I had to delete 2 years worth of work yesterday (1-4-17) because I had the wrong grandparents for Fannie, thus having to redo everything. Any info would be much appreciated. Thx
Julie
Hi Julie! I've lost my password to my own blog, so I'll answer as a commenter.
I have heard both tales about Lois, and nothing new.
I have a Fanny Shipley (in my records,) born in the early 1800s, mother Fanny Judah and father Robert Shipley (Robert of the Adam who was born in 1731... not Adam 1) Looking back on that line, I see that this Fanny is descended from Robert of Adam, so she's most likely NOT yours.
Sorry to not be of any help.
Sierrabella/Linda
Thank you for your response.. My Fannie's parents names are John F Shipley and Annie Boren Shipley. My Fannie was born in or around 1867 in Missouri. Her line going back to Adam 1 goes:
John
Larkin
Richard
John
Adam
Richard
Adam 1
My email is : jktwth2@hotmail.com
In case you come across anything.
Thx
I’m a direct descendant of Hugh Shipley -Adam-Robert, etc. My great grandmother was Ellen Shipley, my grandmother was Nora Gibson. I would love to get in contact with any of you. my email is igrdn4me@gmail.com
Thank you !

I am in need of making sure that I have the correct information. On my genealogy account through the Mormons site it says that I am related to President Abraham Lincoln through the Shipley’s. Can someone please check this information and let me know if it is correct or what needs to be changed. I have that my line goes from my mom (Mary Jane Smith 1939- still alive), Jesse Glennis Smith, Florence Viola Higgins (1869-1939), Mary Elizabeth Driver (1828-1890), Ruth Shipley (1763-1862), Adam Shipley (1731-1765), Adam Shipley (1704-1778), Susannah Steven’s, Charles Edward Steven’s (1648-1703). Then the line goes back from Charles to Elizabeth Steven’s (1680-1761), Robert Shipley (1713-1782), Lucy Shipley (1765-1825), Nancy Hanks (1784-1818), Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865).
Thank you for clarifying
I'm also descended from Robert (of Adam) Shipley. I've read that some believe in the Lincoln connection, and that others don't. I read one Lincoln story where he claimed to not know his own family names. Until Lincoln's DNA is found, we can't really claim a relationship.
Adam Shipley was the son of Richard & Elizabeth according to the research done by the Shipleys of Maryland which I belong to. Adam was baptized on Oct.29,1648 in Scruton, Yorkshire, England. Members of this society went to England & found records on Adam & his family.
In 1687 Adam bought 500 acres called Adam the First on Elk Ridge-this is probably the land your ancestor Ulysees was referring to. He was from Yorkshire & NOT from Wales.
I'm well aware of the Adam Shipley story. I've belonged to the Shipleys of Maryland for years. In fact, my great-great Uncle Ulysses H. Shipley was a founding father of the organization.
This entire Scruton story is a recent development which came from ONE member.
I am supposedly descended from two, possibly three of Adam's sons, yet my English DNA originates in London and western England and not Yorkshire.
My most recent belief is that our Shipleys of Maryland organization has evolved from two or more Shipley families and become terribly intertwined. An article dated September 15, 1926 in the Frederick Post, Frederick Maryland, stated that Ulysses... Treasurer of the "Shipley Family" stated that two brothers settled in Elkridge Landing Maryland in 1734 from Cardiff Wales. Perhaps their ship embarked from Cardiff. Perhaps the Shipleys organization was based on cousins of Adam who came to America 66 years later.
Copy and pasting from ONE SOURCE doesn't make it true. Be careful in your research.
Hello SierraBella,
I have recently been hired to create a new website for the Shipleys of Maryland organization. Would it be possible to obtain your permission to use some of the old photographs of Shipley ancestors that you have posted on your blog? I would really appreciate it.
Of course, I would be honored. If you need names or dates of any of these people, just ask. Good luck with your task. I'm excited to see the finished website. lindamello5569@gmail.com
