Prudy Campbell

Prudence Campbell Crawford- Posted by Hello
Among my inherited photographs was this one, labeled "Prudy Crawford, Graham Missouri." It wasn't until several months ago that I discovered she was Prudence Campbell, sister of my great-great grandmother Ellen.
Prudence was born about 1840 in Athens County, Ohio.
The 1870 census shows her still single, living with family, and employed as a teacher.
She married a short time after that, to a William E. Crawford. They lived in Missouri, and had two daughters Josie and Edna, before her death in 1880.
I need to do more research on Prudy. During those times, a 30 year old school-marm spinster wasn't something to be proud of. I'd love to know whether she was a mail-order bride.
Maybe her Civil War veteran brothers hooked her up with one of their war buddies who'd settled in Missouri? And maybe they paid him?

Prudence?

Yes.

Purdy?

I've seen puridier.

I have family from around Lima Ohio from that timeframe. Maybe we're cousins. Many brides of Civil War veterans were from marriages arraigned around the former soldier’s benefits.

Hello Nick-
I know what you mean about purdy, or not!
This photo reminds me of the old Lily Tomlin telephone operator sketch... which you're probably not old enough to have seen.
Thank you for the "soldier's benefits" info.
We really could be cousins. I have tons of old photographs of people in the Athens County area, (and Harris Ferry West Virginia) and still researching whether there's a relation or not.
Haven't yet come across any Dangers in the family...

I turn 32 this year and I can remember the Lily Tomlin bit from the Electric Company also the bit she did on the oversized rocking chair.

It may be hard to pinpoint any Dangers in your family tree. My Great Great Great Grandfather Jake Danger came to this country to assist in fighting off the british during the revolutionary war. We Dangers have been averting tradgity evry since. Due to security we keep sketcy records of our geneology. There are plenty of bad guys out there wanting to hunt us down for foiling thier evil plots. Perhaps you can find some last names we have in common on the "Out of Darkness" link from yesterday's post. Danger

Quite an anonymous family tree you have!
I remember reading about Jake Danger in High School Civics. Wasn't his g-g grandson the infamous Zeke Danger who was a double-agent during the Civil War?

That's the story that made it to the public. You see he was actually the leader on a private army named Danger's Raiders. They were a politically motivated group of Southern Abolitionists, whose ranks had infiltrated both the Union and Confederate armies. He largely controlled the intelligence going to each side. Picking his battles wisely Zeke sided with the Union in a secret deal with then Secretary of State under Lincoln, William H. Steward. The Union agreed to make a greater push towards abolishing slavery, resulting in the Emancipation Proclamation. Zeke decided after the carnage at Antietam that the battle for States rights would be better fought in the halls of congress.

Well I must admit I like your picture as well.
You remind me someone I used to *ahem* date...

date huh? does the *ahem* mean date naked?

Are you the adult in the profile picture? crisp foreground with fuzzy background, winter hat with flower in spring bloom, more pleasant contradictions

My profile pic is myself, as a little girl, smelling a flower. I believe that is a tree behind the flower, not an adult... that would be NAMBLA material (if one changed the "B" to a "G.")
There are two photos of myself on my sierravistas.blogspot.com/ site. The topless shot from May 16 is pretty old. boy that's an understatement! The more recent photo is dated April 12, and there is a camera in front of my face, as usual.
*ahem* usually means 'nekked' but not always.
